You Don't Really Like Soccer....

It's the World Cup.

It isn't really a big deal to you, but you sure love to pretend that it is. You couldn't name more than one player on any single team. You don't really know much about the game other than Brazil is generally pretty good (something about a fellow named Pele...). Two months from now you'll have nothing to say about the tournament, nor about the year round schedule of the various competitive soccer leagues around the world. But for now you sure love to talk about it and pretend to be enthralled by the drama that only a 1-0 blowout can produce....

Get serious.

If I happen across a soccer game on TV I will usually watch for a while. I'd like to get fired up about the World Cup--I even have a team that I can root for with good reason (Holland)--but I can't.

It is partially because of what you say: why would I suddenly become a die-hard fan now when for the last four years and beyond I haven't bothered following the game at all.

So your point stands.

However, the other side of the coin might be this: the World Cup is kind of like the new year. It's a chance (psychologically) to start over, start fresh. So you make a resolution to this or that.

I've wanted to be a true soccer fan for a number of years, partially because I feel I ought to be (being 1st generation Dutch) and partially because I really do like the game. What better time to start applying this resolution than World Cup time?

Having said that, while I've turned the antenna so that I can pick up CBC this month (trailer trash!), I haven't watched a single game yet.

That's because I generally don't watch sports at all. I love playing them (usually), but don't really like to watch them that much (unless I'm with a bunch of people).

I think I might place a moratorium on soccer blogs for a while. My opinions seem to be getting me in trouble. And while, yes, I think soccer sucks (and the sudden North American "super-fans" are kind of ridiculous), it's not worth losing friends over.... ;)

Well, you're not in trouble with me (though I disagree with your opinion of soccer). I'd say you're spot on with the Sudden Super Fans where previously there were few or none.

I'm open to having my mind changed about soccer, it just hasn't changed yet. I certainly haven't enjoyed playing it - probably because I'm terrible at it (I'd rank my soccer skill level somewhere near to my birthing a child skill level). But, when I have tried to watch a game I just find it slow - the countless minutes of midfield dickering just bore me.... It's like watching a mid-90's New Jersey Devils game when the neutral zone trap was in full force. I enjoy sports that are a little more quickly paced, like NASCAR. Just jokes. NASCAR isn't a sport. Anyone offended by THAT?

Maybe I've just never settled into the moment of a "football match" with a Guiness in hand and a scarf around my neck....

A little off topic perhaps, but does anyone REALLY watch poker on t.v? I for one am terrible at it and do not enjoy it - maybe that is why I do not like watching it.

You know who loves watching poker on TV? My wife. Weird, eh?

THAT is weird! But funny.
